He was predeceased by: his parents, Henry Backer and Alice Backer (Sausele); his brother Bill Backer; his parents-in-law, Lloyd and Fern Larson; his sons, Joel Olson and Wade Olson; his son-in-law Ulf Deininger; his daughter Diana; and his granddaughter Amanda Flinn.
He is survived by: his wife Loraye Larson; his children, Heidi Flinn (Jeff) of Montevideo, Candace Lageson of Madison, MN, James Backer Jr. (Angie) of Montevideo, Bridget Mills (Jeff) of Montevideo and Pamela Deininger of Germany; his grandchildren, Casey, Corey Olson, Josh Hilbrands (Aimee), Katie Flinn (Derek), Kayla Beatty, Jeffrey "Huck" Flinn III, Lucas, Tanner, Maddilyn Lageson, Morgan, Brittney, Payten Backer, Tucker (Mayson), Sommer, Maxamus Mills (Amber) and Michael Deininger (Jessica); and his great grandchildren, Peyton, Hailee, Harper, Gracelynn, Jackson, Bennet, Ryder, Miles, Audrey, Kinley, Taeya, Bryson, Bella, Landon, Nathan, Josephine, Axel, Harvey and Kai.
