He was predeceased by: his parents, Howard Schmidt and Marjorie Schmidt (Schade); his brother-in-law Arlin Busch; and his grandsons, Isaac Schmidt and Malachi Plocher.
He is survived by: his wife Judith Waters; his children, Stephen Schmidt (Sarah) of Litchfield, IL, Michael Schmidt (Angela) of Watertown, SD, Kristin Gaarder of Sartell, MN and Jill Plocher (Martin) of Manitowoc, WI; his grandchildren, Andrew Schmidt (Rachel), Thomas Frank (Bailey Taitano), Natasha Baker (Shane), Aaron Schmidt (Alexis Horneck), Garrett Gaarder, Zachariah Plocher (Shilo), Isaiah Plocher, Jonathan Schmidt, Mashayla Plocher, Abigail Schmidt and Kathryn Schmidt; his great grandchildren, Conner, Oliver, Jeshua, Leonardo, Arya, Lainey and Valerie; and his siblings, Gary Schmidt (Mary) and Joan Dice (Dale). He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
