He was predeceased by: his parents, Hazen Abels and Dorothy Abels (Flood); his parents-in-law, Leon and Marie Coudron; his granddaughter Savanna Abels; his siblings-in-law, Lloyd Welu, Thomas Swedzinski, John Shopteese, Robert Walser, Robert Vandendriessche and Marlene Abels; his nephews, Tim Coudron, David Coudron and Melvin Welu; and his niece Jolene Hjelmberg.
He is survived by: his wife Irene Abels of Michael's Catholic Church; his children, Laura Goodman (Matthew) and Wayne Abels (Jennifer); his grandchildren, Katharine, Anna, Tobias Goodman, Skylar and Brooklyn Abels; his siblings, Gerald Abels, Douglas Abels (Carol), Cheryl Allex, Karen Abels, David Abels and Cynthia Abels; and his siblings-in-law, Helen Welu, Madeline Swedzinski, Roger Coudron (Deanna), Joanne Shopteese, Daniel Coudron (Grace), Dorothy Vandendriessche, Charles Coudron (Mary Jean), Richard Coudron (Lois), Judy Maeyaert (Francis), Michael Coudron (Celeste) and Jeanette Lilleberg (Jim). He is also survived by many cousins, nephews and nieces.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 15th 2026 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM and on Friday, October 16th 2026 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday, October 16th 2026 at 11:00 AM at the St. John's the Baptist Church (18241 1st Ave, New Ulm, MN 56073). A burial will be held on Friday, October 16th 2026 from 1:30 PM to 1:45 PM at the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery.
Memorials preferred to St. John's the Baptist Church or New Ulm Medical Center Oncology.
