He was predeceased by: his parents, Tony Schmitz and Hildegarde Schmitz; his wife Joan Gaida; his brother Ray; and his son-in-law Clint Conzemius.
He is survived by: his children, Mary Veldhouse, Tim Schmitz (Nancy), Cathie Peterson (Jim), Carol Rengel (Mike) and Jennifer Conzemius. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren; and 23 great grandchildren.
Visitation was held on Thursday, September 3rd 2026 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM and on Friday, September 4th 2026 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. A rosary was held on Thursday, September 3rd 2026 from 6:15 PM to 7:00 PM at the Schoeneberger Funeral and Cremation Service (100 Jake St, Perham, MN 56573). A funeral service was held on Thursday, September 3rd 2026 from 6:30 PM to 7:00 PM at the same location. A Mass was held on Friday, September 4th 2026 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the St. Henry's Catholic Church (234 2nd Ave SW, Perham, MN 56573). A burial was held on Friday, September 4th 2026 from 12:15 PM to 1:00 PM at the St. Henry's Catholic Church Cemetery (234 2nd Ave SW, Perham, MN 56573).
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Saint Henry's Area School.
