He was predeceased by: his parents, Herbert Freitag and Violet Bertha Freitag (Wendt); his wife Janice Isabelle Mattison (LaFebvre); his grandson Ryan Mattison; and his brother Marlin Freitag.
He is survived by: his girlfriend Carolyn Toupin; his children, Dale Mattison (Debbie) of Colorado Springs, Neil Mattison (Linda) of Thief River Falls, Gerry Lee Mattison of Plummer, Alan Mattison of Plummer, James Mattison (Teresa) of Thief River Falls and Karl Mattison (Nancy) of Amissville, Virginia; and his grandchildren, Richard, Eric, Brad, Cory, Chris, Coral, Sarah, Sam, Jacob, Joshua, Michael, William, Taylor and Levi. He is also survived by many great-grandchildren, nephews; and many other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 5th 2026 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Ursday Johnson Funeral Service (420 Labree Ave, Thief River Falls, MN 56701). A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday, November 6th 2026 at 11:00 AM at the St. Joseph Catholic Church (305 Minnesota Ave, Brooks, MN 56715).
