He was predeceased by: his parents, Helen Gladys Schmitz (Weiss) and Sylvester Schmitz; his brother Brian Schmitz; and his nephews, Simon and Christopher.
He is survived by: his wife Kathleen "Kathy" Solheim of Red Lake Falls; his children, Ashley Leines (Pat), Garrett Schmitz (Hayley) and Leah Bergeson (Skyler); his grandchildren, Brooklyn, Tate, Letti, Lainey, Rawlings and Cooper; and his siblings, Gale (Carol), Joel (Judy), Terry (Mary), Kevin, Troy (Stacie), Sharon (Mike), Roxanne (Ross), Kristie (Rusty), Cindy (Walter), DelRae (Bruce), Brenda (Wayne) and Paula (Denny).
Visitation was held on Thursday, September 24th 2026 from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM and on Friday, September 25th 2026 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the St. Joseph Catholic Church (112 Edward St NE, Red Lake Falls, MN 56750). A prayer was held on Thursday, September 24th 2026 at 6:30 PM at the same location. A Mass of Christian burial was held on Friday, September 25th 2026 at 11:00 AM at the same location.
