He was predeceased by: his parents, Otis Nelson and Norma Nelson; his siblings, Jim, Otis "Henry", David, Peter, Marilyn O'Connell, Nancy Scantlin and Alice Giefer; and his brothers-in-law, Eddie O'Connell, Dave Scantlin, Les Bush, Wayne Giefer and Jerry Johnson.
He is survived by: his wife Shirly Larsen; his children, Chad (Julie Nelson), Kyle (Laura Larsen) and Katie; his son-in-law Dom Kellen of Eyota; his grandchildren, Madison, Michael, Malia Nelson, Lilly, Elina, Lizzy Larsen, Zakary, Brodie and Cooper Kellen; his siblings, Tom (Darlene), Steve (Debra), Eric, Karen Bush, Ruth Johnson, Sarah Thorpe (Kevin) and Christine Wilson; and his sisters-in-law, LeeAnn Nelson and Marie Nelson. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
