He was predeceased by: his parents, Wesley Shaler and Signe Shaler; his stepfather Leonard Reedholm; his brother-in-law Paul Harwood; and his nephew Michael Harwood.

He is survived by: his wife Wendy Shaler; his daughters, Sara Shaler (Charles Russell) of Mendota Heights and Stephanie Shaler of St. Cloud; his granddaughter Mia Russell; his sisters, Sally Harwood (Sara) of Urbandale, Iowa, Mary Day (Signe) of Ames, Iowa and Emily Osam (Marty) of Ames, Iowa; his pet Mya; his grandkitties, Pippi, Twister, Baby and Swissy; and his friends, Chuck McGriff and Tim Croxen. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Memorials are preferred to Tri-County Humane Society and Quiet Oaks Hospice.
