He was predeceased by: his parents, Edward and Stella; his brother Gerald; and his sister-in-law Dorothy Ernster. He is survived by: his wife Marie (Thill); his children, Elizabeth Ruddock, Patrick (Sherry), Laura Ernster, Craig, Annemarie Fulfer (Shane), Joseph Sr. (Brianna Hudson) and Brittany Ernster (Bryan Ganzer); his grandchildren, Brandonlee, Tony, Jayce, Gabriella, Aaron, Iyana, Joseph Jr., Andrew, Christopher, Makenzie and Natalie; his brothers, Donald (Dee), Edward and Paul (Linda); and his sister-in-law Joan Ernster.
