He was predeceased by: his parents, Peter Exley and Phyllis Benjamin Exley; and his brother James. He is survived by: his wife Mary Theresa Downing; his sons, Benjamin (Emily Topinka) and Andrew (Megan Smith); his grandchildren, Clare and Christopher; and his siblings, Joseph (Rita Joe), Peter (Pam), Christopher (Nancy), Diane Skipton (Randall) and Mary Jo Murphy (Patrick). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
