He was predeceased by: his parents, Ernest Pontinen and Pearl Pontinen (Niska); and his brother Kenneth Pontinen. He is survived by: his wife Arlene; his children, Kathy Hagen (Ronald) and Gary Pontinen (Kari); his granddaughters, Dr. Heidi Pontinen and Jill Pontinen; his brother Paul Pontinen (Linda); his niece Dr. Laura Meyers (Sam); and his nephews, Dr. Tom Pontinen (Sylwia) and Jon Pontinen (Erin).

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made in Dick's honor to the Richard E. Pontinen Scholarship Fund at Hamline University.
