Effie Christenson Obituary

Effie S. Christenson, 89 of New London, died Sunday, June 25, 2017 at GlenOaks Care Center in New London. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 1, 2017 at Hope Presbyterian Church in Spicer. Visitation will be from 5- 8 p.m. Friday at the Johnson Funeral Home in New London and for one hour prior to the services at the church.

Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in New London. Please feel free to wear your Twins and Viking colors to the funeral. Effie Christenson was born on March 15, 1928 on the family farm in Fahlun Township, the daughter of John and Jennie (Flym) Swart. She grew up on the family farm and attended country grade school. On February 22, 1947, Effie was united in marriage to Robert Christenson in Willmar.

To this union two sons and two daughters were born. They made their home in Spicer and New London where she worked as a waitress before working at Rice Memorial Hospital in housekeeping and laundry, retiring in 1990 as a laundry supervisor. Effie and Robert were able to share in 38 years of marriage before Robert's death on January 3, 1986.

Effie was a big fan of all sports especially the Minnesota Twins and Vikings. She enjoyed playing bingo, feeding the birds, trips to the casino with family and friends, spending time with her grandchildren and volunteering as a foster grandparent at Prairie Woods Elementary. Effie is survived by her children, Doug Christenson of New London, Ron (Bev) Christenson of Morgan, Carol (Rickey) Palmquist of New London and Connie (Andy) Swanson of New London; ten grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; siblings, Jennie Johnson of Willmar and Henry (Mona) Swart of Spicer.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; parents; daughter-in-law, LaDonna; sister, Martha; and seven brothers, John, George, Bill, Mike, Anton, Al and Martin.
