He was predeceased by: his parents, Jack Smith and Dorothy Smith (Escher); his great grandchild Penelopie Begnaud; his nephews, Brandon Smith and Shawn Smith; and his brother-in-law Jeff Howard.
He is survived by: his daughter Dawn Peterson (Jeff) of Decorah, IA; his grandchildren, Tayla Begnaud (Stephanie), Kyle Begnaud (Chelsea), Kody Begnaud (Shelby), Taryn Sanderman and Tegyn Sanderman; his great grandchildren, Annabeth Begnaud, Pru Begnaud, Thalia Begnaud and Pierce Begnaud; his siblings, Vivian Howard, Gary Smith (Sandy) and Terry Smith; his nephews, Chris Howard (Jill), Tim Howard (Lana), Bryan Howard (Stacy) and Cameron Smith (Tamra); and his niece Megan Novack (Bob).
A celebration of life will be held on Friday, October 9th 2026 from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the Griffin-Gray Funeral Home (201 3rd Ave NW, Stewartville, MN 55976). The military honors will be held on Friday, October 9th 2026 at 12:00 PM at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery (715 US-52, Preston, MN 55965).
