He was predeceased by : his father Roy Gilbert; and his pet Walter. He is survived by : his mother Ruth Gilbert (Johnson) of Grand Forks, ND; his wife Gretchen Fredeen; his son Michael Gilbert (Samantha) of Minneapolis, MN; his siblings, Julie Riske (Butch) of Grand Forks, ND and Jeff Gilbert (Kim); his close friend Jen McArdle; and his pet Lucy. He is also survived by several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to the family are preferred.
