He was predeceased by: his parents, Leonard Spears and Hattie Spears (Kinslow); his children, Betsy Danner and Daniel Spears; and his sisters, Marty and Peggy.

He is survived by: his wife Nancy Spears; his children, Randy Paulson, Gilbert Paulson and Angela Spears; and his siblings, Ted Spears, Terri Burns and Kerry Durham. He is also survived by five grandchildren; many great grandchildren.
