He was predeceased by: his wife Mary Jane Backsmeyer; his parents, Carl Backsmeyer and Bernice Backsmeyer; and his siblings, Peggy Hackstadt (Wayne), Diana Struckhoff (Charles) and Greg Backsmeyer.

He is survived by: his sons, Jason Backsmeyer (Lisann) and Justin Backsmeyer (Brittani); his grandchildren, Hudsen and Pace Backsmeyer; and his sister Kandy Hoffman (late Craig). He is also survived by Grandfather to his three granddaughters.
