He is survived by: his children, James P. Smoot (Kim), Larry E. Smoot, Tyrone Smoot, Phyllis D. Bryant (Maurice) and Toni Smith (Timothy); and his siblings, Willie Smoot (Ida), George Smoot (Ollie), Charles Smoot, Jesse Lee Smoot, Hubert Smoot (Callie), Hattie Manuel, Ella Segers Backus, Glendora Green (James), Laura Williamson, Martha Wilson (Gary), Linda Williams (James) and Robert Lee Smoot. He is also survived by grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
