She was predeceased by: her husband Werner Bouwhuis; her brother Karl Groppe; her sister-in-law Irmgard Vogel (Rudy); her niece Linda Heep (Vogel); and her brother-in-law Horst Gerkins.
She is survived by: her son Wolfgang; her daughter-in-law Ann Bouwhuis; her granddaughters, Romy Uelk (Timothy) and Abigail Bremer (Matthew); her great grandchildren, Lena Uelk, Adler Bremer and Nora Uelk; her sister Erika Gerkins; and her sisters-in-law, Josefine Groppe and Gerda Tollner (Dieter).
Bernhardine expressed her creativity and found purpose in making quilts for those she loved and donating quilts to children in foster care.
