He is survived by: his wife Ellen; his children, Joanna Shear (Mike Perkins) of Santa Clara and Jason Shear (Michelle) of Austin, Texas; his grandchildren, Evie, Madeleina Shear, Alex and Natalie Perkins; his sisters, Carol Caruthers (Richard) and Martha Roper (Peter Scales); his niece Cara Caruthers; and his nephews, Chad Caruthers and Dane Roper. He is also survived by cousins.
After retiring, he worked with the Hagan Foundation to help children with financial needs as well as great promise achieve their dreams of attending college.
