He was predeceased by: his parents, Ronald Lee and Earlene Kay Peterson; his brother-in-law Bud Norman; and his in-laws, Murray and Frances Norman.

He is survived by: his wife Melissa "Missy" Peterson; his children, Courtney Patterson (Nathan) and Christopher Peterson; his grandchildren, Caden, Braden (Payton Wilfong), Chaelyn Patterson, Karley, Miles Peterson and Zachary Perrin; his brother Jonathan Peterson (Tammy); and his siblings-in-law, Phil Norman (Kristy), Gina Taylor (Doug) and Donna Norman. He is also survived by several uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The family requests that memorials be made to North County or Central Backpack Program in Earl's memory, ensuring that his passion for education continues to inspire future generations.
