He was predeceased by: his parents, William B. Schmitz and Frances Alberta Schmitz (Walendorf); his siblings, David Schmitz, MaryAnn Thielbar, Linda Schmitz and Loretta Schmitz; and his siblings-in-law, Wayne Thielbar, Dennis King, Magdelene Schmitz, Irene Schmitz and Judy Schmitz.

He is survived by: his wife Mary; his daughter Lisa Hand (Matthew); his grandchildren, Joshua Adam Tharp (Jennifer), Jules Elizabeth Hand and Claudia Frances Annie Hand; and his siblings, Fred Schmitz, Thomas Schmitz, James Schmitz (Gail) and Teresa King. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
