He was predeceased by: his parents, Leo John and Louise Josephine Backes (Bescheinen); his granddaughter Audrey Grace Backes; his sister Bernice (Vincent); his son-in-law Michael Hagenhoff; and his brother-in-law Ed Pfahl.
He is survived by: his wife Nancy L. Backes; his children, Leon Backes (Jane) of Dallas, TX, Ronald Backes (Debbie) of Jefferson City, Kenneth Backes (Jolene) of Pleasant Hill, Linda Backes of Jefferson City, Douglas Backes (Lisa) of Rowlett, TX, Norma Hagenhoff of Hallsville, Wanda Frank (George) of Linn, Glenn Backes (Tracey) of Etterville and Lila Biggs (John) of St. Martins; his siblings, Bette Pfahl and James Backes (Carol); and his grandchildren, John Backes (Amber), Blake Backes, Shaun Backes (Nikki), Sarah Boss (Jesse), Kelli Backes, Brandi Broussard (Chris), Ashleigh Schembs (George), Brett Dunlap (Jessica), Samantha Bruner (Branton), Anna Bunch (John), Heather Harris (Mathew), Rachel Welch (Ryan), David Hagenhoff (Jessica), Erica Hagenhoff, Hannah Brandt (Aaron), Jacob Frank, Sami Frank (Drake Donoho), Mathew Frank, Bryce Backes (Maria), Deanna Backes, Trevor Meisel, Jaxen Long, Ruby Long and Alyissa Nelson (James). He is also survived by 38 great-grandchildren.
A prayer was held on Wednesday, July 9th 2025 at 3:30 PM at the Taos Knights of Columbus Hall (7128 Rte M, Jefferson City, MO 65101). Visitation was held on Wednesday, July 9th 2025 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the same location. A Mass of Christian burial was held on Thursday, July 10th 2025 at 11:00 AM at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church (7319 Rte M, Jefferson City, MO 65101).
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Audrey Grace Foundation, c/o New Horizons, Abilene, TX or Central Missouri Honor Flight—two causes close to Bill's heart.
