He was predeceased by : his spouse Marion Nies (Meyer); his daughter Corinne Mason (Robert); his sibling Shirley Boland (John); and his parents, Adolph P. Nies and Evelyn Nies (Quellmalz).

He is survived by : his close friend Pamela Gomes; his daughters, Margaret Hale (Thomas), Constance Finger (James) and Julia Miller (Daniel); his grandchildren, Laura Poindexter (Steven), Andrew Green (Heather), Jennifer Tran (Victor), Jamie Suthers (Brian), Julia Fowler, Joseph Finger (Lindsey), Anne-Marie Russell (James) and Christine Harris (Nathan); his sister-in-law Betty Meyer; and his caregiver Trish Giaminetti.

“My deepest sympathies for the loved ones losing the wonderful Don Nies. My prayers and healing thoughts go to dear friend Pam, and Jim/Candice as well as Don's other many loved ones. Knowing him thru the MAC and YPO for the last 30 years, he was always kind, interesting and so stately. Every interaction was positive. He was a gem & will be missed by many.
