He was predeceased by: his parents, C. E. Penning (Bud) and Alvina Penning (Setzer); his brother Bill Penning; his nephew Keith Penning; and his parents-in-law, Don and Dottie Schloessman.

He is survived by: his wife Debbie (Schloessman); his children, Dave Penning (Karen), Scott Penning (Jody), Pat Penning and Chris Penning (Nicole); his grandchildren, Amanda Brodbeck (Craig), Hayley Penning, Courtney Penning (Pietro Serra), Hannah Penning, Scotty Penning, Jax Penning and Brooke Reger; his great grandchildren, Aubrey and Ava Brodbeck; his brother Pete Penning (Kathy); and his siblings-in-law, Glen and Ken Schloessman (Pam).

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the National Kidney Foundation in his honor.
