He was predeceased by : his parents, Sam Poynter and Sybille Poynter (Baymiller); his wife Betty Stone; his children, Michael, Scott Poynter and Sharon Offutt; and his granddaughter Tara Poynter.

He is survived by : his grandchildren, Robyn Whitaker (Bob), RaNae White (Jimy), Todd Poynter (Pam), Amber Mangold (Paul), Jennifer Cockrell (Brian) and Jacob Britton; and his children-in-law, Darrell Offutt and Brenda Rinehart. He is also survived by 12 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.
