He was predeceased by: his parents, Jewell Carter and Coy Carter; and his siblings, Vivian and Johnny. He is survived by: his wife Kathy; his daughters, Missy Montgomery (Robert), Janie Farris (Marc), Rebecca Bryson (Shane) and Brianna Harris (Dakota); his grandchildren, Carter Campbell (Cody), Alexis Yates (Ceejay), Alex Farris (Chloe), Howdy Montgomery, Arizona Harris, Kinlee Harris, Raylee Harris and Whitlee Harris; his great grandchildren, Morgan, Blake and Tate; and his brothers, Marshall Carter (Judy) and Ronnie Carter (Sandy). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and other extended family.
