He was predeceased by : his parents, John Pennington and Dorothy Pennington; and his siblings, Joan Fischer, Paul Pennington (Diana) and Joseph Pennington.

He is survived by : his siblings, Mary Parmer (Mike), Judy Buback (John), Carol Wright (Troy), Roger Pennington and John Pennington (Victoria); and his nieces and nephews, Nathan, Matt, Nick, Jared, Thomas, Austin, Nicholas, Jay, Melissa, Courtney, Kasey, Emily, Jodi, Scott and Jim.

Visitation was held on Friday, May 10th 2024 from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM at the Baue Funeral Home - Cave Springs (3950 W Clay St, St Charles, MO 63301). A funeral service was held on Friday, May 10th 2024 from 2:00 PM to 2:30 PM at the same location. A graveside service was held on Friday, May 10th 2024 from 2:45 PM to 3:00 PM at the same location.

Memorials may be made in James's name to American Cancer Society.
