He was predeceased by: his parents, Riley C. Smith and Thelma L. Smith (Swope); his sisters, Virginia Thomas and Nancy Ohl; his parents-in-law, A. J. and Marjorie Perry; and his close friend Clif Nelson.

He is survived by: his wife Sharon L. (Perry); his son Robert Steven; his granddaughters, Marsha LeAnn and Stephanie JoAnn; his friend Greater; his children, Rob Smith of Amity, Missouri, Marsha Mezger (Doug) of Carlisle and Stephanie Huffman (Mitch) of Maysville, Missouri; his grandchildren, Zach (Toni), Wyatt (Clair), Paige, Madeline, Bryan, Elijah, Vincent, Alli and Riley John; his great grandchild Kohen; his brothers-in-law, Bill Ohl and Doug Perry (Debbie); and his pet Benjamin Trooper.
