He was predeceased by: his son Charles "Charlie" Robert Coates; his parents, Jacqueline Coates and Charles Coates; his brother Charles Robert Coates; his brother-in-law Hank Alexander; his parents-in-law, Evelyn Plate and Valentine "Bill" Plate; and his close friend Tim Buescher.
He is survived by: his wife Valerie Coates (Plate); his sister Carol Coates Alexander; his siblings-in-law, Richard Plate (Linda), Sharon Wengert (Kerry), Michael Plate (Molly), Bob Plate (Kayla) and Bill Plate; his nieces and nephews, Tim, Danielle Alexander, Christine Sinay, Stacey Love (Jon), Sarah Skyles (Ryan), Amanda Marsden (Josh), Kerry Wengert II (Tracy), Kacie Wengert Bryant, Kristen Lamm (Luke), Chris Plate (Rachel), Ben Plate (Courtney) and Emma Raub (Jacob); his brother Ronnie Besselman (John); and also David Biermann.
