He was predeceased by: his parents, Thelma Mears (Linville) and Dick Mears; his sisters, Donna Callaway, Nancy Jobes and Eleanor Kalin; and his sons, Ty Lane and Richard Gene Mears.

He is survived by: his wife Arla Mears of St. Joseph; his daughter Jennafer Cross (Aaron) of Osborn; his grandchildren, Abigail Marsh (Wyatt) of Kansas City, Mason Cross (Annabelle) of Liberty, Carter Cross (Jessica) of Houston, TX and Hayden Cross of Kansas City; and his great grandchildren, Hudson, Lucille Marsh and Atlas Cross. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Memorials are requested to the Community Christian Church.
