He was predeceased by: his parents, Henry J. Merz and Stella Politte Merz; his former wife Claudia Rohr Merz; his son David M. Merz; and his siblings, Norbert Merz and Norma Baumle.
He is survived by: his children, Laura Schmidt (Michael) and Philip Merz (Carrie); his daughter-in-law Patricia Merz; his grandchildren, Matthew, David, Angela, Jeffrey, Theresa, Michael, Grace, Amanda and Lindsey; his sisters, Noreen Boyer and Charlotte Deeken; his wife Patricia Prosser Merz; and his stepchildren, Edward Prosser (Kathy), Timothy Prosser (Betty), Christopher Prosser (Valerie), Cindy Tresider (Robert) and Patrick (Stephanie). He is also survived by great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, November 14th 2026 from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the Hoffmeister South County Chapel (1515 Lemay Ferry Rd, St. Louis, MO 63125).
