He is survived by: his brother Charles; his nephews, Jim (Mary), Dick (Jan) and Steve Hellwege (Lynn); his niece Faith Rockenstein; his great-nieces and great-nephews, Emily Hellwege, Elley Hellwege, Meg Hellwege, Anne Hellwege, David Rockenstein, Sam Hellwege and Andrew Hellwege; and his extended family, Ann Smith and Patrick Smith, Jr..

Contributions may be made to Walter's Walk in St Louis, the ACLU, The Midwest Museum of American Art in Elkhart, Indiana or The Saint Louis Art Museum.
