He was predeceased by: his wife Julia Schmelz (Lanius); his parents, Robert Schmelz and Ruth Schmelz; his sister Linda Schmelz; his niece Kelly Ann Schmelz; and his grandparents, Clyde, Virgie Williams, Leonard and Minnie Schmelz.
He is survived by: his brother Mike Schmelz (Pam); his children, Steven Schmelz and Angela Laubinger of Union; his stepson Elton Lanius; his daughter-in-law Nicole Lanius; and his grandchildren, Devin Smith (Bridgette), Kurtiss Smith (Sarah), Justin Schmelz, Tyler Schmelz, Alyiah Hammock (Mitch), Nicolas, Ava and Julian Lanius. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, and great-grandchildren.
