He was predeceased by: his daughter Diane Smith; his parents, C. Everett and Ava; his brothers, John Wynne (Evelyn) and Tom Smith; his parents-in-law, Joseph and Marie; and his brothers-in-law, Leonard Brautigam, Clifford Brautigam and Kevin Kassmann.

He is survived by: his wife JoAnn Smith; his children, Michael Smith of Union and Laurie Ruether (Jim) of Union; his grandchildren, Zachary Ruether (Kait) of Blue Springs, MO and Alexis Alfermann (Neal) of Labadie; his great grandchildren, Luke Ruether and Maverick Alfermann; and his siblings-in-law, Ruth Smith of Washington, Rosemary Brautigam of Union, Lorraine Thompson (Gary) of Union, Ann Brautigam of Union, Linda Kassmann of Union, Shirley Brautigam of Union and Jerome Brautigam (Doris) of Union. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

A rosary will be held on Thursday, September 17th 2026 from 3:30 PM to 4:00 PM at the Oltmann Funeral Home - Union (103 N Church St, Union, MO 63084). Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 17th 2026 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the same location. A Mass will be held on Friday, September 18th 2026 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the Immaculate Conception Church (100 N Washington Ave, Union, MO 63084).

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Immaculate Conception School or St. John Gildehaus School.
