Mike Wilson wrote a sympathy message

“Ed was a great man and an American hero. After being severely wounded as a Marine in WW II, He overcame his disabilities and went on to greatness. Ed became the Chief Historian of the National Park Service. He had a photographic memory. In all the battlefield tours of all the wars I have seen him lead, I've never seen him use notes, even in his nineties. He also had an incredible sense of humor. He will be sorely missed. Mike Wilson”

John Horn wrote a sympathy message

“Mr. Bearss was very kind to me. He read each of my books before publication and always gave me good advice. I met him only once, at the dedication of the marker for the 39th Illinois on the Darbytown Road southeast of Richmond about 20 years ago. Present was also my son, then a little boy and now a Marine like Mr. Bearss. God bless you Mr. Bearss and thank you for your service! Your family has our sympathies.”
