He was predeceased by : his fathers, Lewis Smith and Bill Smith; his former life partner Hilda Moore Smith; his son Kirk Smith; and his son-in-law Steve McClellan.

He is survived by : his children, Joe Smith III (Kim) and Ladye Ann Smith McClellan; his grandchildren, Annie McClellan Moore (Joe), Ross Hester (Win), Searcy Smith Rhodes (Richard) and Steven McClellan; his great grandchildren, Lexie Scott Hollis, Jane Hester, Josie Hester and Rob Hester; his brother Pearman Smith (Becky); and his caregivers, Margaret, Nikki, Debra, Diane and Rosie.

In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the Kirk Smith Scholarship fund at PDS or the First Presbyterian Church in Cleveland, MS.
