He was predeceased by : his father William "Bill" Carroll, Jr.; and his sister Rhonda Holmes. He is survived by : his mother Nona Bowles Carroll; and his siblings, Deborah McDaniel (Donnie), Ann Lewis (Tim) and Jamie Carroll (Art Cook). He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

“Oh wow! I was sad to see and hear of this. We loved John! AKA, "Cup of Tea", or "the Columbian Drug Lord." Back in the mid 90's I was serving an LDS mission and was located in Collins, Mississippi, which is about 40 mins from Columbia. It wasn't way convenient for him, but he made a point to come visit us 3 or 4 times a week and bought us Lunch, Breakfast or Dinner almost every time. That guy had a pure heart of Gold. He was a one of a kind and he will be missed dearly.”
