He was predeceased by: his brothers, Steve, Johnny, Peter and Mark Pitalo. He is survived by: his wife Julie Pitalo; his sons, Darrell Michael Pitalo and Randal Joseph Pitalo (Rawndy Gibson); his stepsons, Bill Lizana and Chuck Lizana; his grandchildren, Anthony Joseph Pitalo (Lindsey) and Brittany Pitalo Boyd (Brandon); his nieces, Judy Pitalo and Becky; and his nephew Johnny Pitalo. He is also survived by grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Coach Lou's honor to the Slavonian Benevolent Association (Slavonian Lodge) in Biloxi, Mississippi.
