He was predeceased by: his parents, James Freels and Maxine Sykes Freels; and his brother Charles "Kenny" Freels. He is survived by: his son Glen Raymond Fortson; his granddaughters, Kaili Rae Fortson, Ariella Faith Geraldine Fortson and Amara Lee Fortson; his siblings, Roylynn Freels (Rita), David Freels, John Freels (Kelli) and Laura Marler (Brad); and his sister-in-law Micki Freels. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.
