He was predeceased by: his parents, Sula Lytal Pettigrew and Dixon Lee Pettigrew; his former wife Pat Pettigrew; his son James M. Pettigrew, Jr.; and his son-in-law Dale Shepherd.

He is survived by: his wife Patricia Ann Dobbs; his children, Beverly Pettigrew Doss of Houston, MS, Vicki Shepherd of Columbus, MS, David Pettigrew (Heather) of Idaho and Kevin Hamilton of Caledonia, MS; his grandchildren, Danielle Newberry (Chris), Kelli Foster (Zach), Leah Stone (Matt), Josh Pettigrew (Ariel), Elisabeth Fletcher (Aidan), Caleb Pettigrew and Elijah Pettigrew; and his great grandchildren, Sawyer, Miller Foster, Banks, Lynlee Stone, Katelynn, William, Lydia Newberry, Ava and James Pettigrew.
