He was predeceased by : his wife Melanie "Lanie" Springfield Thornton; his parents, Jimmy Thornton and Sue Bryant Sorrels; and his stepfather Don Sorrels. He is survived by : his stepmother Retha Thornton; his sons, Hunter Thornton and Michael Thornton (Reagan); and his sisters, Jennifer Thornton, Elizabeth Thornton (Bruce Bankston) and Susanne Storey (Carl). He is also survived by nieces and nephews.
