He was predeceased by: his parents, Toll Oliver and Lawis Blakely Mitchell; and his siblings, Ann Rosser, Geraldene Barrentine, Howard Mitchell and Lyndell Mitchell.

He is survived by: his wife Vera Browning Mitchell; his children, Norma Caine (Ben) of Batesville and Timothy Mitchell of Starkville; his sister Donna Browning (John) of Madison; and his sibling's children, Karla Tate, Scott Browning and Mike Barrentine.

“Mr. Mitchell was one of the teachers for Agriculture at my high school alma mater, J. Z. George High School, North Carrollton. He was the first teacher who was not a part of my family to ever set foot in my childhood home. He came to ask my parents permission to allow me to go to Mississippi State University with him to represent my school at the FFA State Convention on 1985. It was the start of my very busy summer for me that I will never forget. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.”
