He was predeceased by: his parents, David Newell and Helen Newell; his brother Robert "Bob" Newell; and his sister-in-law Pam Kizziah. He is survived by: his wife Rita Newell; his children, Dr. Daniel Newell (Amy) and Christy Pritchard (Anthony); his grandchildren, Gracie Newell Terry (Mason), Libby Newell, Zane Pritchard (Lauren Pickett), Wes Pritchard and Anna Kate Pritchard; his sister Dianne Manning (Ed); and his siblings-in-law, Katherine Newell, Mary Bramblett (Steve) and Ken Kizziah. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, extended family.

Visitation was held on Thursday, September 25th 2025 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Robert Barham Family Funeral Home (6300 MS-39, Meridian, MS 39305). A funeral service was held on Friday, September 26th 2025 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at the St. Patrick Catholic Church (2601 Davis St, Meridian, MS 39301).

In 2020, he was inducted into the Mississippi Rodeo Hall of Fame in recognition of a lifetime of extraordinary contributions to the sport of rodeo in Mississippi.

“It breaks our hearts to know that Dr. Newell passed away. We spent many hours on the baseball fields with Dr. Newell, Rita and Family, as our Grandsons really grew up together playing baseball. Though those times have passed, the Friendship never ended. Our prayers for Rita, Christy and Anthony, Daniel and Amy and their Families.
