He was predeceased by: his parents, John Anderson and Mamie Hester Patterson; his grandsons, Christopher B. Patterson and Jonathan M. Patterson; and his sister Jonell Patterson Posey.

He is survived by: his wife Emily Waycaster Patterson; his sons, John Craig Patterson (Debbie) and Robert H. Patterson (Rhonda); and his grandchildren, Jessie Patterson Koon (Joe), Jayla Patterson Cruber (Cameron), Jamie Rose Patterson and Derrik Boland (Jennifer). He is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandson.
