He was predeceased by: his parents, Emmett Holsey Hayes Sr. and Ola Pearl Gay Hayes; his former wife Avis Hayes; his grandson Robert Wesley Harlan; his siblings, Maurice Cody Hayes, Robert A. Hayes, William Richard Hayes, Myrtle Donovan, Peggy Joyce Tinney and Lilah Mae Johnson; and his stepmother Levadie Hayes.
He is survived by: his wife Ernestine McBeth Hayes; his children, Andy Richard Hayes (Jan), Patrick Earl Hayes (Darla) and Sharron Hayes Harlan; his grandchildren, James Harlan II (Sarah), Stephanie Brunelle and Lauren Hayes; his great grandchildren, Taylor Harlan, James Harlan III, Julia Harlan, Elyse Harlan, Peyton Brunelle, Easton Brunelle, Anna King and Lane King; and his sisters, Eleanor Smith and Linda Atcheson. He is also survived by extended family members and friends.
