He was predeceased by: his father John Franklin Shirley, Sr.. He is survived by: his children, Abigail L. Shirley and James David Shirley, Jr.; his mother Gloria Brock Shirley (Brock); his siblings, John F. "Brock" Shirley, Jr. (Betty) and Stacey Shirley; his granddaughter Bexleigh Shirley; his nephew John O'Quin (Haley); and his nieces, Victoria O'Quin and Brittany Irby.

Memorials are suggested to the Union Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.
