He was predeceased by: his parents, Henry Rawls Johnston and Luessie Carraway Johnston; his parents-in-law, Homer and Helen Pope; his siblings, Louise Brumfield (Gene), Mattie Lee Newman (Hilton), Betty Sue Smith, Nevelyn Allred (Purvis), Harold Johnston (Anna) and Clayton Johnston; his siblings-in-law, Opal Johnston and C. M. Hux; his niece Susan Smith; and his nephews, Harry Brumfield, Stephen Johnston and Thomas Brent Johnston.

He is survived by: his wife Mary Pope Johnston; his daughters, Donna Smith (Dean), Carolynn Smith (Mike) and Deena Johnston; his grandchildren, Tyler Smith (Nikki), Ashton Thornton (Mitchell), Austin Smith (Victoria), Sam Smith, Kelsey Strahan (Josh) and Mary Claire Freeman; his great grandchildren, Jaxon Montague, Hagen Smith, Lawson Smith, Charlotte Smith, Tucker Thornton, Archer Thornton, Miller Thornton and Kinley Strahan; his siblings, Robert Johnston, Guy Johnston, Douglas Johnston, Etta Merle Hux and Lexine Deer (Jimmy); his siblings-in-law, Joe David Pope (Nancy) and Tot Johnston; his grandsons, Peyton, Mitchell, Josh and Jaxon; and his nephews, Roger Brumfield, James Newman, John Newman, Joe Newman, Kyle Hux, Howard Allred, Johnny Allred, Jeff Deer, Larry Smith, Mike Johnston, Ronnie Johnston, Dr. Clay Johnston and Ricky Johnston.
