He was predeceased by: his parents, James "Jim" Thornton and Lessie Lack Thornton; his former spouse Gene Still Kirk Thornton of Tupelo; the mother of his children Gene Kirk Thornton; his daughter Katherine Gail Thornton; and his grandson Bradley 'Bo Lymburner.

He is survived by: his wife Annette Tiner Gookin Thornton; his children, Carolyn Hale (Skip) of Roanoke, VA, Kim Arnold (Glen) of Madison, MS and Dixon Thornton (Vickie) of Madison, MS; his stepdaughters, Robin Purnell (Dan) of Tupelo, Page Smith (Kip) of Tupelo and Mary Shea Rogers (John David) of Tupelo; and his brothers, Bill Thornton of Clinton, MS and Lloyd Thornton (Frankie) of Madison, MS. He is also survived by seventeen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
