He was predeceased by: his former wife Virginia Lorraine Bell; his daughter Hilda Marie Colwell; and his parents, Lola Mae Holifield and Alexander Samuel Bell. He is survived by: his wife Nora Mae Bell; and his stepchildren, Max Bell (Gail), Richard Bell (Annette), Hazel Woods (Benny), Shannon Mitchell (Jamie), Sara Esquivel, Kristina Hand and John J. Walker Jr. (Jeanel). He is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
