He was predeceased by: his parents, Earl Mathews and Bobbie Lavenia Davis Mathews; his wife Theresa Bernice Carter Mathews; and his sister Barbara Jean Parker. He is survived by: his children, Kelvin Mathews, Lynise Chapin-Whatley, Anita Johnson and LeAnne Mathews-York; his grandchildren, Larissa Mathews, Carmen Chapin, Jessica Chapin-Reep, Daniel Johnson, Lindsey Johnson, Lauren York-Hoda and Miller Elizabeth York; and his brother-in-law Garland Cook. He is also survived by 10 Great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.
Memorials may be made to Immanual Baptist church, Blair E. Baston Children's Hospital or St. Jude's Children's research Hospital.
